OneDrive Desktop App Repeatedly Signing In/Out After Migrating

Summary

OneDrive logout cycle issue

Body

OneDrive Continually Logs Out of the Desktop Application

If your OneDrive desktop app is continuously attempting to process changes for any number of files after the migration from your campus "unk.edu" "unomaha.edu" or "unl.edu" to "nebraska.edu", you will need to remove any shared links/shortcuts to files and folders you are not the owner of in the web version of OneDrive.

How can I tell if I have the issue?

Check your OneDrive desktop application. It is located in the bottom right of your task bar on a Windows device, represented by a cloud icon. You may need to click on the ^ symbol to reveal it in some cases.

Left-click on the OneDrive icon to open the status menu. If you observe the following, you will need to follow the steps in this article to resolve the issue:

  • OneDrive is stuck "processing changes" for any number of files
  • After a number of seconds, OneDrive suddenly signs out, then the application closes
  • The application reopens, signs in automatically, then repeats this process

Removing the problematic files

Note: You only need to do this once, it will sync changes to any devices you are using to access OneDrive.

Head to portal.office.com in any browser window and sign in with your TrueYou credentials (NUID@nebraska.edu).

Click the dot matrix (waffle) in the top-left corner and open the OneDrive web app from within the menu.

Click on the "My files" tab on the left-hand side. From there you will see a list of all your personal files plus files shared with you.

The problematic files can easily be identified by the "people" icon and/or an arrow in the bottom-right and the "Owner" being a user different than yourself under the "Sharing" tab.

Hover your cursor over the file and click the 3 dots that appear next to the name. In the menu that opens, click "Remove".

Once all of these shortcuts have been removed, the OneDrive desktop app should function normally after syncing these changes (it may take a few minutes for this to go through).
