Duo - Enabling Duo Account Recovery (Restore)

Body

Background

Two-factor authentication (2FA) with Cisco Duo adds an extra layer of security to your accounts, but losing access to your Duo device—such as your phone—can interrupt your ability to log in. Without a backup method, you may be locked out of essential services like email, learning platforms, and campus systems until you contact the Help Center for assistance.

Enabling backup options (such as Duo Restore or cloud backup) ensures you can quickly recover your Duo settings if you replace or reset your device. This minimizes downtime and avoids unnecessary delays, helping you:

  • Stay connected to critical services without interruption.
  • Reduce reliance on the Help Center, saving time for both you and support staff.
  • Maintain security while making recovery simple and user-friendly.

By setting up backup now, you’re protecting your access and avoiding stress later.

Duo Account Recovery

Duo Mobile's restore functionality lets you back up Duo-protected accounts and third-party OTP accounts (such as Google or Facebook) for recovery to the same device or to a new device. To avoid account lockout, we recommend setting up your new phone, before you delete Duo Mobile from your old device.

Account Types

iOS

Due to how apps are automatically backed up in iOS, the backup functionality of Duo Restore is always on for iOS users who have iCloud enabled and they will not see a notification indicating their information is being backed up.

Android

Automatic backups require that your device has a PIN, pattern, or password screen lock. You may need to update your screen lock settings before continuing.

  1. Locate the Google Backup settings page in your device's settings. Navigation to the Google backup setting can vary by phone manufacturer. For example, on Pixel devices navigate to Settings → Google → Backup. You must create Google backups for Duo Mobile backup and restore from cloud to work. Backup services offered by other vendors, such as Samsung Cloud backup, will not work for Duo Mobile backup and restore.
  2. If you haven't already enabled app data in your backup, select the checkbox next to Other device data to include Duo Restore information in your backup. Tap Confirm.
  3. If you already have Google account backup enabled you should see Apps included in the "Backup Details" information.
  4. If you just enabled Google backup, tap Back up now to create your first system backup before continuing to the next step.
  5. At this point, you can also choose to enable account recovery for your third-party accounts. Open the Duo Mobile app and navigate to Settings → Duo Instant Restore.
  6. Tap Automatically reconnect third-party accounts from cloud to enable. This will include third-party accounts in your Duo Restore information.

Enabling Third-party Backup

Duo can not only protect your university account but your personal accounts, too. If you have added third-party accounts to your Duo mobile app, you can enable backup for them as well. When Duo Mobile detects you have a third-party account, you'll be prompted to create a recovery password. Tap Enable Now to set one.

Steps (if not already enabled)

  1. Open the Duo mobile app on your device
  2. Tap the hamburger menu located at the top-left
  3. Select Settings:
  4. Duo mobile app settings gearEnable third-party back by selecting the toggle:
  5. Enabling third-party backup using toggleOnce enabled, enter a recovery password hat has 10-128 characters. Note: this password can be different from your university account.
    1. Do not lose this password! You'll need to provide it again to recover these accounts. Duo cannot recover this password for you. Be sure to store it securely. If you lose this password, you'll need to manually reconnect your third-party accounts by visiting each of those services individually and following their 2FA recovery process.Third-party password prompt
  6. Remember, University support and Duo Support can't recover your third-party accounts for you or reset your third-party recovery password.
