VPN Client Quick Start Guide - Windows

Objective

Provide instructions on the installation and usage of the NU VPN, Palo Alto Global Protect.

Downloading VPN Client 

  1. Navigate to https://nu-vpn.nebraska.edu   

  1. Sign in with your NUID and password.   

  1. You should be prompted for DUO 2-factor by whatever method you have chosen.

  1. Once signed in, download the client by clicking “GlobalProtect Agent” on the main page and choosing the version that matches your Operating System.

  1. Install the GlobalProtect Agent by opening the downloaded file named GlobalProtect.msi, and following the prompts within the installer Once installed, there will be a Globe icon in the Windows taskbar, at the bottom right of the screen, for quick access. 

 

Running the VPN Client 

  1. From the Start Menu, open the GlobalProtect App, or click on the GlobalProtect icon on the Taskbar.

  1. If needed, enter the portal address of nu-vpn.nebraska.edu 

  1. Click the Connect button.   

  1. When prompted, sign in with your NUID and password (You should then be prompted for DUO 2-factor by whatever method you have chosen).

  1. Close the confirmation window. Optional - Check the box in the bottom right corner to not show the message again. 

  1. When prompted to Launch Application, select GlobalProtect,  optionally choose to remember your choice, and then click Open Link.

  1. Once connected, you should see the GlobalProtect icon in the Taskbar with a small shield icon indicating the connection. If it is not there, click the arrow to the right of the Taskbar and you should see the GlobalProtect globe there. You can hover over it to see your connection status, or click on it to open GlobalProtect.

  1. To view your VPN settings, open GlobalProtect, and then find the Settings menu by clicking on the three horizontal lines in the upper left.  From there, you can view tabs that show your connection details. 

 

Disconnecting from the VPN Client 

  • When you no longer wish to be connected, click on the GlobalProtect icon on the Taskbar or open it from the system tray and click Disconnect. When disabled, the GlobalProtect icon will remain in the system tray in a greyed-out state, for quick access

Configuring Local Firewalls to Allow Access 

When connected to NU VPN, you will be assigned a dynamic IP in the range of 10.144.0.0/19.  To allow access to any systems that you manage, you will need to make sure that this range is allowed through the local firewall.
