Server Backups, Data Protection and Disaster Recovery - Frequently Asked Questions

The following topics should provide you additional insight into how Data Protection and Disaster Recovery services are set up to operate at NU, allowing you to decide if this backup program is right for you. Q: What computing platforms are supported by this service?

A: NU ITS Data Protection and Disaster Recovery services support a wide variety of operating systems; Linux, MacOS, & Windows Server.

Q: How long are backup files kept?

A: Backups are generally retained for 6 months but we have the ability to configure custom retention policies to meet a specific use-case or regulatory requirement.  Keep in mind, the longer your files are retained the more data your backups will consume.

Q: Do we keep multiple copies of the same file?

A: No we do not keep multiple versions or copies of the same file.  Your entire server is backed up at a point in time and the files on the server will be saved at that point in time, recovery of the server will restore the files as they were at that point in time.

Q: How easy is it to get started?

A: Information Technology Services will provide you with all the instructions you .

Q: How long do backups take to complete?

A: This depends on the speed of your network connection, if you have a 100Mb connection it will be faster then a 10Mb connection. If this is the first backup, then all your data files are backed up and it can take a considerable amount of time. After the first initial backup all the following backups are incremental greatly reducing the backup time.

Q: Is there a cost to this service?

A: Yes. The fee is based on how much storage space is being used. The cost is $0.13/GB per month of storage.
