Objective
What is it?
Captions and/or transcriptions should be included in any video that you include in your course. Captions are the transcribed text that appears on the screen of the video while transcription is an additional document that converts the audio of your video into written text.
Why do it?
Captions and transcripts are valuable resources for a variety of reasons. When a student has a hearing deficit, non-accessible content can cause them to move on from the resource and miss out on valuable information. It doesn't only help students with hearing deficits though, captions/transcripts can help all students; the busy mom that is doing school work while putting her kids to bed, the student who is squeezing schoolwork in on a bus ride, or while they are on break at work. The majority of students say that they find captions helpful at least somewhat when it comes to completing school work. Using captions or transcripts helps to:
- Ensure students who are hard of hearing can consume the content of the video
- Allow students to learn the material at a time that works for them, whether that is in a loud environment, or a quiet environment without headphones.
- Increase comprehension and retention of knowledge with both the audio and seeing the words
- BONUS: Captioned videos can perform better and appear higher up in web searches if public
